Oakland Hills Fire in California Damages Homes and Triggers Evacuations. A five-alarm brush fire in Oakland, California, known as the Keller Fire, prompted evacuation orders after damaging two homes on Friday.
Fire crews are working aggressively to extinguish the blaze, which began in a home on Mountain Avenue and quickly spread to a grove of Eucalyptus trees, reaching 15 acres in size. As of Saturday morning, the fire was reported to be 50% contained, according to CalFire.
Fire Chief Damon Covington stated that while crews have halted the fire’s forward progress, significant work remains. Although two homes have been affected, many others on Maynard, Sanford, Greenridge, and Canyon Oaks streets were threatened but remained undamaged.

Evacuation orders were initially issued for Campus Drive and Crystal Ridge Court, with the area expanding as the fire spread. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao urged residents to evacuate immediately, emphasizing that the measures were taken to protect public health.
Delane Sims, whose home was one of the two damaged, recounted the frightening experience. She shared that her husband was inside when the flames ignited the landscape, causing a front window to explode.
“That explosion woke him up, and he was able to get out alive, and that’s what I’m grateful for,” she said, expressing her deep gratitude for his safety. “I thank God for that.”
