Teahupoo, a tiny village in French Polynesia, is legendary in surfing. But it has one of the heaviest waves on the planet. After Round 3 of the men’s competition, Teahupo’o gained global fame. On Monday, July 29, Teahupo’o showcased perfect wave-riding conditions. The swells were massive and formed flawless barrels. Only the world’s elite surfers could ride them. The athletes put on an incredible show. It was one of the greatest days in Olympic surfing history. It also marked a historic day in the sport’s entire history. Teahupo’o’s “Wall of Skulls” proved to be an ideal venue.
“The way people see surfing has changed forever,” said Tim Elter. Elter was eliminated after Round 2. He spoke to Reuters about the impact. “We have this huge platform,” he said. The competition was halted before the women’s third round began. Howling winds and rain ruined the perfect waves. Despite this, competitors stayed positive.
